FAQ
An all-road bike is a versatile road bike that combines speed on tarmac with comfort on gravel and rough roads. It’s perfect for long rides, daily commuting and bikepacking — wherever a classic road bike reaches its limits.
A classic road bike is designed for maximum speed on tarmac — narrow tyres, aggressive geometry. A gravel bike is more suitable for off-road use, with wider tyres and a more relaxed geometry for trails and gravel paths. An all-road bike sits somewhere in between: more comfortable than a road bike, faster than a gravel bike — ideal for mixed terrain without compromise. The veloheld.icon accommodates tyres up to 40 mm wide and is built precisely for this purpose.
Steel frames absorb vibrations noticeably better than aluminium and carbon frames — particularly on long rides and rough terrain. Aluminium frames are stiff and responsive, but transmit every bump directly to the rider. Carbon frames are lightweight but expensive, difficult to repair and not built to last forever. Steel falls somewhere in between: comfortable, durable, repairable and sustainable, as it is recyclable. Depending on the frame height, the veloheld.icon weighs from approx. 1,800 g — significantly lighter than steel’s reputation.
Modern CrMo steel frames are significantly lighter than their reputation suggests — the veloheld.icon weighs from around 1,800 g, depending on the frame size. The difference compared to an aluminium frame is minimal, though slightly greater than with carbon — in return, steel offers noticeably greater riding comfort, better vibration damping and a significantly longer lifespan. Once you’ve ridden a steel bike, you’ll rarely want to go back.
Modern steel frames are finished with high-quality paint or powder coatings that provide reliable protection against rust. In addition, we seal the inside of every veloheld frame before dispatch — this also provides long-lasting protection for the inside of the tubes against moisture. With a little care after riding in the rain, the frame will remain in perfect condition for years to come. Steel is easier to maintain than its reputation suggests.
Yes — steel is the frame material of choice for many bikepacking enthusiasts worldwide. The veloheld.icon features eyelets for bottle cages, top-tube bags and mudguard stays. Its comfortable geometry and vibration-damping steel frame make it ideal for long, self-sufficient tours on varied terrain.
For an all-road bike, a 1×12/13 or 2×12 derailleur system is recommended these days — depending on whether you prefer simplicity or finer gear ratios. The veloheld.icon 2026 is optimised for electronic groupsets: Shimano Di2 or SRAM AXS, with fully integrated cable routing. As most road groupsets are now only available in electronic versions, we have optimised the frame for them.
Yes — in addition to the standard colour “Illusion Merlot”, any RAL colour is available (surcharge of €200), in gloss or matt, with black or silver trim. Individually coated in Germany. The result is a bike that not only rides perfectly, but also looks exactly right for you.
You can find the current delivery time directly on the product page — it varies depending on the season and how busy our workshop is.
