FAQ

A gravel bike is a versatile bike that combines the speed of a road bike with the ruggedness of a mountain bike. It’s perfect for riding on gravel, forest tracks, rough roads or easy trails – ideal for adventures, commuting and bikepacking.

Steel frames offer excellent ride comfort, are extremely robust and are easy to repair – a major advantage on long rides. They also provide a smooth ride, which is particularly pleasant on unpaved paths.

Yes, steel is the frame material of choice for many bikepacking enthusiasts. The veloheld gravel bikes feature numerous eyelets and mounting points for panniers, bottle cages, luggage racks or mudguards – ideal for longer, self-sufficient tours.

A titanium frame is extremely durable, corrosion-free and lighter than steel. It offers a sporty, responsive riding experience, yet remains at the same time comfortable and requires practically no maintenance – perfect for anyone who is looking for a high-quality gravel bike for life.

Modern steel frames are finished with high-quality paint or powder coatings that provide reliable protection against rust. With a little care – especially after riding in the rain – the frame will remain in good condition for a long time.

A gravel bike is more versatile than a road bike or cyclocross bike. It combines the speed of a road bike with the off-road capability of a cyclocross bikes: wider tyres, more comfortable geometry and mounting options for bags make it ideal for everyday use, touring and bikepacking – not just for racing. Whilst a road bike is optimised for asphalt and the cyclocross bike is designed primarily for short, sporty cyclocross races built for, covers a much wider range of applications than the gravel bike. It is the bike for everyone who seeks and adventure on every terrain seek.

Yes – you can have your veloheld gravel bike in your choice of colour. In addition to our standard colours, we offer a selection of over 200 RAL colours and countless Prismatic Powders shades. The result is a bike that not only rides perfectly, but also looks exactly right for you – personalised, unique and handcrafted in Dresden.

The ideal tyre pressure for gravel tyres is – depending on rider weight and terrain – usually between 1.8 and 3.0 bar for 40–50 mm tyre width. On gravel or unpaved roads the tyre pressure be slightly lower in order to achieve greater comfort and grip on such surfaces. On asphalt a higher pressure rolls more efficiently.

With the tubeless system, you can reduce the pressure further without the risk of a puncture. It’s best to start with around 2.3 bar and adjust it according to how it feels and the terrain.

Yes, we also offer almost all our bikes as gravel framesets for self-assembly, so that you can build your own gravel bike completely to your own specifications. Of course you can also order the frame in your choice of colour

For gravel bikes, MTB clipless pedals (e.g. SPD) or wide platform pedals are particularly suitable – depending on your riding style. SPD pedals are ideal for sporty gravel riding, efficient pedalling and long tours, as they clip in and out reliably even in muddy conditions. Platform pedals, on the other hand, offer maximum freedom and are perfect for urban use, short rides and anyone who prefers to ride without clipless pedals. Many gravel riders opt for a combination pedal: one side clip-in, one side platform. This gives you flexibility – whether for everyday use, touring or off-road adventures.

On a gravel bike, you can generally use single-chainring (1x) or double-chainring (2x) systems, as well as hub gears with a belt drive. A 1×12 or 1×13 derailleur is the most popular choice today: light, simple, quiet and ideal for mixed terrain. 2×12 drivetrains offer particularly fine gear spacing for long rides and fast road sections. For low-maintenance everyday and bikepacking bikes, hub gears or Pinion gear systems – in combination with a Gates belt drive, they are virtually maintenance-free and extremely durable. Which gear system suits you best depends on whether you want a sporty, versatile or as low-maintenance a ride as possible.

A gravel bike is fast and versatile, but on tarmac it’s usually a bit slower than an all-road bike – because of the wider, higher-grip gravel tyres. On gravel, forest tracks and mixed terrain, it really comes into its own: more control, more stability and, as a result, a more consistent pace. An all-road bike remains more efficient on the road, whilst the gravel bike offers a better balance between speed and versatility.

No: the geometry of our gravel bikes is equally suitable for men and women.

However, we are currently offering a limited-edition special model, the “Female Explorer x velohelding Gravel Bike“, which is specifically aimed at female gravel adventurers.

A gravel bike with a steel frame is slightly heavier than one made of titanium or carbon, but it scores with comfort, stability, and longevity. Modern CrMo steel frames are significantly lighter than their reputation and weigh no more than approx. 0.5 kg more than a titanium frame. For everyday and gravel use, this extra weight hardly matters – many riders particularly appreciate the smooth and comfortable ride character of steel.
