What is PI ROPE exactly?
PI ROPE stands for ultra-lightweight, heavy-duty wheels with textile spokes – handcrafted in Chemnitz and customisable. The idea behind it is as simple as it is ingenious: a spoke is subjected only to tensile stress – and what works perfectly under tension? Exactly, a rope. PI ROPE was founded in 2017, after the first prototype was ready in 2014 and the patent was filed in 2017. It all originated from a research project at Chemnitz University of Technology – today, PI ROPE manufactures in Chemnitz in an old knitting factory dating back to the GDR era. We think that’s rather fitting.
Was macht textile Speichen so besonders?
The textile spokes made from the high-tech fibre Vectran are machine-woven into cables and then fitted into the rim by hand. The result: five times lighter than steel, weighing just 2.2 grams per spoke – and virtually indestructible. But the weight isn’t even the best part.
Whilst vibrations from other materials are transmitted directly to the frame and thus to the rider, the PI ROPE spokes provide damping, resulting in a much smoother ride. Anyone riding a PI ROPE wheelset for the first time notices it immediately – smoother, more responsive, more comfortable.
What’s more, the textile spokes come in twelve colour options – because a good wheelset should look good too. We love that, and it suits us perfectly, doesn’t it?
PI ROPE and veloheld – why it simply makes sense
Local sourcing, handcrafted, genuine commitment to quality – these are things that both companies share. PI ROPE comes from Chemnitz, veloheld from Dresden and Leipzig. A wheel set, which is entirely manufactured in Germany, on a bike, which is manufactured in Europe. For us a perfect match!
