Samoa Orange—the real deal
The colour is called Samoa Orange Metallic (LX2U), with a gloss finish. So it’s not a muted rusty orange, nor a subtle copper shade, but somehow something in between. A rich, warm orange that you can spot from a great distance. In the sun, the metallic particles sparkle merrily across the steel frame, whilst in the shade the frame appears slightly darker.
Added to this are silver trim and a carbon fork, which has been painted in glossy black and bears our logo on both the left and right. Black fork, orange steel frame, silver accents. That’s a perfect match!
Silver runs through it
One thing runs like a common thread through the whole bike. Many of the fittings are finished in silver, which goes beautifully with the Samoa Orange and ultimately creates a very harmonious overall look.
Headset and seatpost clamp are from Chris King in silver, along with our spacers in silver, a bottom bracket from Hope and a Tubus Fly luggage rack made of polished stainless steel. And even the rear light on the rack is silver-anodised, – these are the little details we love.
Incidentally, silver looks much softer on a frame with such a warm colour than black does – almost a bit like an old randonneur. That’s exactly why everything goes together so wonderfully here.
GRX 820 and a pretty chunky tire
The whole thing is powered by a Shimano GRX 820 in 1×12. 40-tooth chainring at the front, and a massive 10-51 cassette at the rear. A single chainring, a huge range, and you still have plenty of room to go down when climbing.
The tyres are Panaracer Gravelking X1 in 45 mm, fitted tubeless, with a bold black tread pattern and a warm brown sidewall. That’s a really chunky tread pattern for a gravel bike, and it makes it pretty clear where this bike is headed. Namely, not just onto cycle paths, but out into the big wide world and on to many adventures.
The cockpit consists of a Ritchey WCS Butano in 440 mm with a 70 mm stem, plus Ritchey Classic handlebar tape in black. The Butano has plenty of flare, as its ends are curved outwards. On rough descents, you simply have much more control with this handlebar.
Lights without batteries, frames without metal plates
At the front, a SON Edelux II in black is mounted on the fork, powered by a Shutter Precision hub dynamo in the DT Swiss GR1600 wheels. No charging, no forgetting, no nasty surprises in the dark. Simply absolutely reliable.
But what we find really exciting is what’s not on it. There are no mudguards, but there is a luggage rack. So that means: this is someone who definitely wants to travel with luggage but has absolutely no intention of missing out on the adventure and getting a bit grubby. We love decisions like this because they’re so wonderfully honest.
Have a good trip and have loads of fun, Robert
